Vienna - Ernst Happel Stadion

The Ernst Happen Stadion is located around 10km outside of Vienna. A five-star stadium in UEFA’s books, it will fit up to 53,000 fans for each fixture it hosts including Austria’s three group games, two quarter finals, a semi final and the Euro 2008 final itself. It is the largest stadium in Austria.

The stadium is used by the Austrian national team and in the past was used to host the 94/95 Champions League final though if FK Austria Wien or SK Rapid Wien are in European action, or Austrian teams involved in either the Champions League or UEFA Cup, the stadium would be opened up to club teams.

Attendance at Euro 2008 will get nowhere near the Ernst Happel record of 92,706, set back in 1960 in a game against the USSR. In the same year, Austria vs Spain also drew a crowd of 91,000. However, the stadium capacity was pretty much cut in half in 1986 when it was completely roofed over. Recent renovations and stadium works push the capacity to 53,000 for Euro 2008.

It is about 15 minutes away from Vienna’s airport and can be reached from the city if you’re travelling by tram, bus, driving, or taking the underground.
